Stanislas Wawrinka
Currently ranked No. 24 in the world, Switzerland’s Sanislas Wawrinka has three career titles, including a gold medal in doubles at the 2008 Olympic Games.
He has been ranked as high as No. 9 in the world, first achieving that rank on June 9, 2008. His highest doubles ranking is No. 90, reached on Nov. 6, 2006.
He forged his way into the Top 100 in 2005, finishing 54th and reaching the quarterfinals at Barcelona. He reached the third round of the French Open, and repeated the feat at the US Open.
In 2006, he reached No. 30 at the end of the season, capturing his first ATP title at Umag when Novak Djokovic retired in the first set due to breathing difficulties. He reached the third round at both Wimbledon and the US Open.
He slipped to 36th in 2007, missing three months due to a knee injury. He reached two finals and has his best Grand Slam performance to date, reaching the fourth round at the US Open.
He surged into the Top 15 in 2008, finishing 13th on the year and making the Top 10 for the first time in June. He reached two finals, including at Rome when he defeated Andy Murray, James Blake and Andy Roddick before falling to Djokovic. The tour de force sent him soaring from 24th to 10th in the rankings. He remained there for 22 weeks before slipping back to 12th on Oct. 13.
During the run, he made the fourth round of both Wimbledon and the US Open. He also teamed with countryman Roger Federer to take the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Beijing Summer Games.
He slipped a bit, but stayed in the Top 25 in 2009, finishing 21st. His best match came in the third round in Monte Carlo when he defeated Federer for the first time. He reached the third round at both the Australian and French Opens, and made the fourth round at Wimbledon, falling to Murray in five sets on Centre Court.
He started 2010 by reaching the final at Chennai, losing to Marin Cilic. After the Australian Open, he took time off to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Alexia, on Feb. 12. He returned to action and made the fourth round at Roland Garros before losing to Federer, then won at Lugano, his first title since 2006. The momentum tailed off with a first-round defeat at Wimbledon.

Personal
Began playing tennis at age eight. Older brother Jonathan teaches tennis, while younger sisters Djananee and Naella both play. Quit school at age 15 to focus on tennis full time. Married wife Ilham on Dec. 12, 2009. Split with longtime coach Dimitri Zavialoff after Wimbledon defeat. New coach is Peter Lundgren.
